Ultimate Filipino Food, Drink and Fashion

Ultimate Filipino Food
by: Catherine Ledesma

What is the number one thing we Filipinos are known for? Especially on holidays? Well, it’s the FOOD. Yes you could say it may be the caring and being hospitable of Filipinos but besides that tourists all over come because of these and the food. For some reason we Filipinos have a way of eating, and has certain taste buds which other people of other culture find it gross.  So what is it that makes Filipino food and the way we eat different from any other culture? To start, We Filipinos love to eat, but more than just eating, we love to eat home-cooked food, that special of flavors and spices, one that is both handed over from tradition yet is widely ingrained in popular culture. First thing you should know that Filipinos rather eat home-cooked food rather than to eat in some fancy restaurant. Sure, we Filipinos may have adopted the different kinds of cuisine but as “pinoy, hinahanap hanap parin nila ang lutong Pilipino”. Another thing is that in every special occasion or holiday, in a filipino family, No gathering would be complete without the lechon and so many other Filipino delicacies that we so enjoy. You can't visit a home without being offered a drink and food from the people there. It seems that food and the Filipino have been deeply rooted together. It may be that through food that brings the Filipino family close together. Another thing is that Filipinos love extra spices/sauces/condiments to food. For example, mangang hilaw with bagoong or seafood with soy sauce or vinegar with garlic, knor and salt.

These are just few things which a Filipino cant eat without those. Thing with Filipinos is that we can live as long as there is rice. Everything has to have rice with Filipinos for some reason. Its like adobo or fish is never good without rice.

It’s a must for Filipinos to have rice. Some Filipinos actually eat pasta or mami noodles with rice. So there you have it some facts I shared about how Filipinos are when it comes to food.

Top 5 Ultimate Filipino Drinks
by: Clarissa Dela Cruz

Here are the top 5 ultimate Filipino drinks that I've come up. I bet you know these drinks, 'cause if you don't you're not a certified Filipino drinker. =))

#5
San Miguel Pale Pilsen

San Miguel Pale Pilsen is one of the oldest beer in the Philippines. It was famous during the 90's and it was everyone's favorite beer back then. Every time I  see or hear Pale Pilsen I usually say "pang matandang beer or pang tatay beer" because of its strong alcohol percent and flavor. This is the fifth ultimate Filipino drink because despite of its strong flavor it was our "elders" favorite drink.

#4
San Mig Light

San Mig Light is a lighter type of beer. Its alcohol percent is lesser than San Miguel Pale Pale Pilsen and it has lesser calories. You can drink lots of it because it's light on the tummy. And if you want a "mahaba-habang inuman" drink San Mig Light. This is indeed the fourth ultimate Filipino drink.

#3
Tanduay Ice

Tanduay ice tastes better than San Mig Light. It almost tastes like Sprite because of its sweet flavor. But beware, Tanduay Ice is not a soft drink or soda, it may taste like one but it still has alcohol in it. So if you're not that much of a drinker don't drink it like a juice. This is the third ultimate Filipino drink because of its sweet yummy alcomix flavor.

#2
The BaR

The BaR is a brand of alcohol which has many flavors such as; Apple, Orange, Lemon-lime, and Strawberry vodka. The BaR was created to appeal to the younger crowd. These are the people who enjoy life and simply love the nightlife and the coolest parties. They are mostly aware of the newest trends in our society. This is the second ultimate Filipino drink because it's a fun drink to share with friends during parties, hang-outs or anywhere.

#1
Sago't Gulaman

I've decided to put Sago't Gulaman on the number one spot because nothing can beat it as an ultimate Filipino drink. What can be more pinoy than this right? Sago't Gulaman is also called Samalamig. It contains pearls, gulaman, caramelized sugar water and of course it won't be complete without ice. Sometimes it is flavored with pandan extract. This is an ultimate Filipino street food afternoon snack.

Ultimate Filpino Fashion
by: Kristine Pastrana

Just when you think that Filipinas do not know how to strut on the catwalk, Filipinas do not just have the passion to wear designed clothes; Filipinas are natural fashionistas.

Tracing its origins, Filipinos had long since been very innovative and creative in the kind of clothes that they wear. The early settlers wore bahag, a loincloth commonly used by Filipino men. This is mostly used by indigenous tribes in the mountains, and until now, is still used in the Cordilllera Mountain. But this is not being looked down upon as a lowly garment as it is made of well-chosen materials, woven in intricate designs that are unique with each individual wearing it.

The Barong Tagalog and Baro’t Saya are the country’s national costume.  The barong is made of a variety of fabrics like the piña fabric, jusi, and banana fabric. This is worn by men during official and special personal occasions. Nowadays, the barong has now been modernized with the polo barong, “gusot-mayaman”  (“gusot” means “wrinkled” and “mayaman” means “wealthy”), linen barongs and shirt-jack barongs. The baro’t saya is the national dress and is worn by women. This is characterized by having a huge pañuelo or shawl around the shoulders, and the terno, having the butterfly sleeves popularized by former First Lady Imelda Marcos.

As the years passed, the influence of the West and the influence of the East on local fashion has made Filipino fashion an ecclectic one. Some of the popular Filipino fashion designers we have today include Mich DulceRafe Totengco, and Monique Lhuillier.
